Walk a mile in my shoes
When I see someone sleeping rough on the streets it breaks my heart. How can we, as a society, allow this to happen? This is why, 23 years ago, I signed up as a volunteer at Matthew Talbot Hostel for the homeless. Most of those in my team joined around the same time and we continue to this day. Every person we meet is not to be pitied but to be helped and loved. Wayside Chapel do similar work, so when I saw this fundraiser, I felt compelled to sign up. Particularly as the route starts where I was born in Parramatta, passes by where I live in West Ryde and finishes where these funds are most needed. It feels like this journey on October 7 parallels my life journey as, the older I get, the more importance a place on “giving back” and on helping those less fortunate than myself. Every week, a person sleeping rough on our streets has to walk 28km to find shelter or a place to sleep.
